Around one in three UK patients referred for an MRI has enough anxiety about the tunnel to make the scan harder than it needs to be, and roughly one in twenty cannot complete it at all in a standard closed scanner. In London in 2026 the answer is not to give up on the scan. It is to pick the right shape of magnet, at the right clinic, for the actual severity of your claustrophobia.
This piece is the working list of which London clinics offer wide-bore and truly open MRI, what the technical difference is, what image quality you give up, and how much the premium is. If you have ever left a scanner half-scanned, this is written for you.
The one-line answer
Most claustrophobic patients in London do fine in a modern 70 cm wide-bore scanner at Vista Health, Alliance Medical, HCA Wellington or an equivalent centre, at standard private MRI pricing. Patients with severe claustrophobia, very large body habitus or an urgent need for a weight-bearing spine study should book into a genuine open or upright MRI, of which London has only a handful, at a modest price premium and with slightly lower image quality.
Wide-bore (70 cm) vs open MRI: the technical difference
The words get used interchangeably, and they should not be. They are different machines with different trade-offs.
A standard closed MRI has a bore, the tube the patient lies inside, of about 60 cm in diameter. It is a full-strength 1.5T or 3T superconducting magnet, and image quality is excellent. It is what nearly every NHS and older private scanner in the UK still uses.
A wide-bore MRI is still a tunnel, but the bore is 70 cm. That extra 10 cm makes a significant psychological difference, and it also allows larger patients (broadly, up to about 200 kg and 55 cm shoulder width) to be scanned comfortably. Crucially, wide-bore machines are still 1.5T or 3T. Image quality is not compromised. Modern Siemens Magnetom Aera, GE SIGNA Voyager and Philips Ingenia scanners installed across London in the last decade are almost all wide-bore.
A truly open MRI is a different beast. The magnet is C-shaped or has two flat plates above and below the patient, with open sides. There is no tunnel at all. But because you cannot build a superconducting magnet in that geometry at full strength, open MRI in London runs at 0.3T to 0.7T, roughly a quarter to a half the field strength of a modern closed scanner. Scans take longer, resolution is lower, and some sequences are simply not available.
Wide-bore MRI clinics in London (2026)
The good news is that wide-bore is now the default at most modern London private MRI centres, and often the patient does not realise the scanner they are being booked into is already 70 cm bore. If you specifically ask, the clinics with confirmed wide-bore capacity include:
- Vista Health - multiple London sites (New Malden, Hendon, Woking, Bristol, and central London referral rooms) running Siemens Magnetom Aera 1.5T wide-bore.
- Alliance Medical - one of the largest UK private imaging networks, with wide-bore installations across Guildford, Sutton, north-west London and City sites.
- HCA Wellington and other HCA hospitals (The Princess Grace, London Bridge Hospital, The Portland) - most MRI suites are 3T wide-bore, with a small number of 1.5T wide-bore units for weight and metallic-implant edge cases.
- The London Clinic, Harley Street - wide-bore 1.5T and 3T, patient-facing anxiety pathway with music, prone options and mirror system.
- Cromwell Hospital - Siemens 3T wide-bore, subspecialist reporting.
- InHealth and Nuffield Health - Nuffield's central London and City sites use wide-bore 1.5T or 3T; InHealth mobile and static units in and around London are largely wide-bore now.
For most claustrophobic patients this is where the story ends. A 70 cm bore, a headphone system with your own music, prone positioning where the anatomy allows, feet-first entry for anything below the shoulders, and a mirror system so you can see out of the scanner, and the scan completes without incident.
Truly open MRI in London
If a 70 cm tunnel is still too much, you need a properly open magnet. In central London the standout site is:
- London MRI Centre, Weymouth Street (W1) - the best-known dedicated open MRI provider in the capital, running a Hitachi Airis-type open scanner. Widely used for severely claustrophobic adults, bariatric patients above the wide-bore weight limit, and paediatric patients who cannot tolerate a tunnel.
- Medserena Upright MRI Centre, Marylebone - technically a specialist upright scanner (see next section), but is also often referred to as an open MRI because of the wide-open sides and lack of tunnel.
- Selected Alliance and InHealth mobile relief units occasionally deploy semi-open low-field scanners around Greater London when demand is high, though these are hard to guarantee bookings on.
Outside London, the closest true open MRI sites tend to be in the Midlands and north-west England. If you live within reach of central London it is almost always simpler to book Weymouth Street or Medserena than to travel further out.
Upright and standing MRI
A niche but genuinely useful option. Upright MRI scans you in a seated or standing position, so the spine and lower limb joints are loaded under body weight the way they are in real life. This can reveal disc bulges, listheses and joint instability that a lying-down scan misses entirely.
In London this is essentially a one or two site service in 2026. Medserena on Weymouth Street operates a FONAR-type upright MRI and is the primary destination for weight-bearing spine and knee imaging. It is a 0.6T scanner, so it is not a replacement for a high-field diagnostic MRI for a brain, prostate or breast query, but for its intended use case it is unmatched. Referrals come mainly from private spinal surgeons, MSK physicians and personal injury specialists.
