If Marylebone is the postcode most patients picture when they hear "private London imaging", the Chelsea and South Kensington corridor is its quiet twin - smaller, cancer-heavy, wired into three big hospitals, and, on a good week, easier to book. This is a guide to the SW3, SW5 and SW7 MRI cluster in 2026: who scans, what they charge, how they differ from W1, and how to pick.
The corridor runs roughly from Sloane Square in the east, along the King's Road and Fulham Road, out to Old Brompton Road and Gloucester Road. Five providers dominate the private MRI market inside that footprint, and the choice between them turns almost entirely on why you are being scanned in the first place.
The one-line answer
For a routine, insured single region MRI in Chelsea or South Kensington, Cromwell Hospital and HCA Chelsea Outpatients handle most of the volume. For oncology, Royal Marsden Private Care is unmatched. For self-pay at the sharpest price, Vista at Sloane Square or Nuffield Health at 55 Wellington Road. All five are inside a 15-minute walk of a District line station, and all five report within 48 hours.
The main providers in the corridor
The private MRI market in the corridor is unusually concentrated. Five names cover almost all of it:
- Cromwell Hospital (Bupa), Cromwell Road, SW5. Full acute private hospital owned by Bupa. 3T Siemens and 1.5T scanners, cardiac MRI, prostate mpMRI, paediatric MRI under general anaesthetic. Highest end of the corridor for both scope and price.
- The Lister Hospital (HCA), Chelsea Bridge Road, SW1W. Just over the Sloane Square boundary. 1.5T MRI, strong on women's health, cardiology and orthopaedics.
- HCA Chelsea Outpatients & Diagnostics, Sydney Street, SW3. Outpatient-only diagnostics unit, 3T scanner, subspecialty MSK and neuro reporting, weekend lists.
- Nuffield Health at 55 Wellington Road, SW7 (via the Nuffield network, with imaging partnerships in the corridor). Wide-bore 1.5T MRI, competitive self-pay pricing, strong physiotherapy tie-in.
- Vista Diagnostics at Sloane Square, SW1W. Independent diagnostic imaging, 3T MRI, one of the more affordable self-pay quotes in central London, extended hours.
Alongside these sit two hospital-based options with narrower private access: Royal Marsden Private Care on Fulham Road (cancer-only pathway) and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital's private wing (general imaging, paediatric). Both are covered below in more detail.
The oncology angle: the Royal Marsden Private Care
The single feature that distinguishes this corridor from every other private imaging cluster in the UK is the presence of the Royal Marsden. Its Private Care unit on Fulham Road offers MRI slots on the same scanners used by NHS cancer patients, reported by the same cancer-subspecialty radiologists. For a suspected or confirmed malignancy - a rising PSA, a suspicious breast finding, a staging scan after biopsy, a follow-up mpMRI after prostate treatment - this is the clinic in the corridor.
Two important caveats. First, Royal Marsden Private Care is not a generalist imaging centre. It will not scan you for a knee niggle. Second, the pathway is usually consultant-led, meaning you need a Royal Marsden or affiliated consultant referral to book. It is meaningfully more expensive than a plain outpatient MRI elsewhere in the corridor, and worth every pound if oncology is the question. Prices versus Marylebone
The Chelsea corridor prices broadly track W1, with two clear patterns: musculoskeletal MRIs are usually a touch cheaper in the SW cluster (particularly at Vista and Nuffield), and hospital-branded imaging at Cromwell and HCA sits slightly above the W1 median because of full-hospital overheads. These are indicative ranges. Contrast, cardiac MRI, prostate mpMRI and paediatric MRI under general anaesthetic carry substantial supplements, sometimes doubling the base fee. Insurance pricing is separate and generally uses the insurer's negotiated rate.
Scanner strengths and open-bore options
Field strength - 1.5T versus 3T - is not the whole story, but it is the first thing to check. 3T scanners give sharper images for neuro, musculoskeletal small joints, prostate and pituitary work. 1.5T is entirely adequate for most spine, abdomen and general body imaging, and is often quieter and more comfortable. Cromwell, HCA Chelsea Outpatients and Vista Sloane Square all run 3T machines. Nuffield 55 Wellington Road and the Lister use 1.5T.
For claustrophobic patients, wide-bore and open-bore options in the corridor are more limited than in Marylebone. Nuffield's 55 Wellington Road wide-bore 1.5T is the most comfortable widely available option in SW7. Vista and HCA Chelsea Outpatients both operate short-bore 3T scanners that are shorter than older tunnel designs but not truly open. Cromwell can accommodate general anaesthetic MRI for adults who cannot tolerate a standard scan - a genuinely rare capability in central London.
