You cannot use too much petroleum jelly.
The single biggest thing you can do to help healing is a generous layer of jelly on the healing area at every nappy change for the first 7 to 10 days.

Breast or bottle feeds continue exactly as before. A comfort feed straight after the procedure often settles the first upset.

Skip the bath on day one
Warm sponge cleaning is fine from day one. A gentle bath is fine from day two onwards, avoiding harsh soaps or bubble bath for two weeks.

Do we need to change the feeding schedule beforehand?
No dramatic changes are needed. We ask that your baby has a normal feed about one hour before the appointment so they arrive settled and are ready for a comfort feed straight afterwards. If you are bottle-feeding, bring a made-up bottle for after the procedure.

Can we bath our baby on the first day?
On day one we suggest a warm sponge or flannel wash rather than a full bath. From day two a short, gentle bath in plain warm water is fine. Avoid bubble bath, strongly perfumed soaps and long soaks for the first two weeks while the skin is healing.

Is crying during the procedure normal?
Yes, and it is usually about being held still and undressed rather than pain - the local anaesthetic works well. Most babies settle within a few minutes of being back with you and having a feed. A little grumbling for the rest of the day is normal.

Do we need a follow-up appointment?
A routine face-to-face follow-up is not usually needed. You are welcome to send us a photo at day three or day seven if you want reassurance, and a same-doctor review in clinic is always available at no extra cost if anything worries you.

You leave with a direct clinic number to call for anything urgent in the first two weeks. Out of hours, use 111 for advice or 999 in the very unlikely event of heavy bleeding or a baby who is seriously unwell.
