General surgery at Spire Leicester
Spire Leicester describes general surgery as focused on abdominal and intestinal conditions, from the gullet and stomach through the small bowel and colon to the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. Its list of frequently requested operations is gallbladder or gallstone removal, hernia operations, skin lesion treatment and varicose vein procedures.
In all it lists about nineteen procedures. Colorectal items include colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and bowel surgery; gastrointestinal diagnostics include gastroscopy and barium studies; there are treatments for haemorrhoids and anal conditions; and minor surgery covers moles, cysts, warts and ingrown toenails. Related specialties it mentions are bariatric, colorectal and vascular surgery, gastroenterology and endocrinology.
The hospital is on Gartree Road, Oadby, LE2 2FF, with free unlimited parking. It lists MRI, ultrasound, X-ray and cardiac CT on site, and says it accepts self-pay, insured and NHS patients.
General surgery at Nuffield Health Leicester
Nuffield Health defines general surgery as covering the abdomen, oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, together with the skin and breasts. It names varicose vein removal, hernia repair, haemorrhoidectomy, cholecystectomy and breast surgery.
The service is described as consultant-led, with minimally invasive options, private rooms and flexible family visiting. Nuffield Health says patients typically need a GP referral, which can be sent to the hospital, and that its self-pay promise gives upfront pricing with no limits on care.
The Scraptoft Lane site, LE5 1HY, has ample free parking and weekday outpatient hours running to 21:00 from Monday to Thursday. Inpatient hours of 06:30 to 18:00 are stated for every day of the week.
NHS general surgery in Leicester
NHS general surgery in the city is arranged under NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland ICB. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust runs Leicester Royal Infirmary, which houses the county's only A&E, Glenfield Hospital, and Leicester General Hospital, where it describes the East Midlands Planned Care Centre as a facility intended to help reduce waiting for appointments and treatment. We did not verify which site hosts which surgical lists.
Non-urgent surgery in England should start within 18 weeks of referral, and suspected cancer is covered by the 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard. Patients referred by a GP can compare providers under the right to choose, and the My Planned Care site shows local average waits.
What the common operations involve
Hernias appear as a bulge in the groin or around the navel that is more obvious on standing or coughing. Repair, by open or keyhole surgery, closes the weakness, usually with a mesh. Recovery depends on the operation and your job, so ask what lifting restrictions apply.
Gallstones cause bouts of pain under the right ribs, often after a fatty meal. Ultrasound shows them, and keyhole removal of the gallbladder is the usual treatment when symptoms recur; most people leave hospital the same day or the next.
Haemorrhoids are managed with diet, fibre, and creams initially, then banding or surgery if bleeding or prolapse persists. New rectal bleeding should not be assumed to be piles, because bowel cancer can present the same way, so a doctor should assess it.
Skin lumps such as cysts and lipomas can be removed under local anaesthetic, and anything changing in colour, size or shape needs a skin cancer check.
Questions to ask before surgery
People in Oadby, Wigston and the south of the county may be closer to Spire, while Scraptoft, Syston and Thurmaston residents may find Nuffield Health quicker. Distance matters less than the answers to practical questions.
-
Ask whether the operation is keyhole or open and why your surgeon recommends that approach.
-
Ask if it is a day case, and what aftercare and wound checks are included.
-
Ask for a written quote covering consultation, scans, theatre, anaesthetist, stay and follow-up.
-
Ask where any scan or colonoscopy will be done, and when pathology results will reach you.
Referral and checking details
Nuffield Health says patients typically need a GP referral for general surgery, and insurers will normally require one too. Spire accepts self-pay, insured and NHS patients and lists virtual consultations for some services.
Operations and consultant lists change, so confirm with the hospital. Nothing here recommends a provider.

This guide is for information, not medical advice.
Your GP or consultant knows your history and can tell you which parts apply to you. If your symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or come with red-flag features, seek urgent medical care. Figures and availability change, so treat them as a guide and confirm with the provider.
