Private healthcare in Liverpool

Private healthcare in Liverpool: hospitals, specialties and how to access them

Liverpool's private care is concentrated in a few places: a general hospital beside Greenbank Park in the south, a private unit in the grounds of the Aintree site in the north, a private suite at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, and a Ramsay hospital out at Ormskirk. This guide describes what each provider's own website says and how the local NHS fits around them.

Key facts

At a glance.

  • Providers covered

Spire Liverpool Hospital on Greenbank Road, the Sefton Suite on Lower Lane near Aintree, the Rowan Suite at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, and Ramsay's Renacres Hospital in Ormskirk. Each had its own page retrieved for this guide.

  • Broadest general list

Spire Liverpool lists bones and joints, eye surgery, general surgery, gynaecology, ENT, skin, heart, respiratory, neurophysiology, pain management, a vascular clinic and more, with CT, MRI, ultrasound, X-ray and blood tests on site.

  • NHS links

The Sefton Suite describes itself as the private hospital for Aintree University Hospital, and the Rowan Suite is the private patient division of the NHS Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Both say income supports the NHS side.

  • NHS structure

NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB commissions NHS care here. In England you can choose the provider for an NHS consultant-led first appointment; that right does not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

  • Specialist NHS neighbours

The Walton Centre on Lower Lane in Fazakerley is the NHS neurology and neurosurgery hospital, and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital on Thomas Drive is the NHS cardiac, thoracic and respiratory hospital.

  • Emergencies

Independent hospitals do not replace A&E. For a life-threatening emergency call 999; for urgent advice that is not an emergency use NHS 111.

Hospitals and the specialties they list

The table includes only providers whose own pages were retrieved for this guide in October 2026. A blank in a row means the page did not name a specialty, not that it is definitely absent. Services change, so confirm the specific service you want directly with the provider.

Spire Liverpool beside Greenbank Park

Spire Liverpool Hospital is at 57 Greenbank Road, L18 1HQ, directly opposite Greenbank Park. Its page describes a drive from the M62 along the A5058 Queens Drive towards Allerton and Mossley Hill, a right turn onto North Mossley Hill Road and then on to Greenbank Road, with the hospital on the right. Parking on site is free, according to the hospital, and its about page puts the building about a fifteen-minute car journey from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Without a car, the hospital's own wording is that it is roughly four miles from Lime Street station and served by taxis and local buses; it does not give route numbers. Check a journey planner for the day you are travelling rather than assuming a direct service.

On site it lists CT, MRI, ultrasound, X-ray and blood tests. The hospital shows a CQC rating of Good on its pages and self-check-in tablets for patients. It also mentions an insurance product of its own, which is simply a funding option and not something you need in order to be seen.

The Sefton Suite, the Rowan Suite and Renacres

The Sefton Suite is on Lower Lane (L9 7AL), described as situated within the grounds of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and as the private hospital for Aintree University Hospital. It also has a diagnostic centre in Crosby. Its pages say profits are reinvested in NHS services, and that self-paying and insured patients can arrange appointments directly. Parking information was not given on the pages retrieved, so ask before arriving by car.

The Rowan Suite is the private patient division of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital on Thomas Drive (L14 3PE). That hospital's own site describes cardiac care, thoracic surgery and respiratory medicine and says private patients come from far beyond the city. It is a specialist heart and chest site and not a general private hospital.

Ramsay's Renacres Hospital is in Ormskirk, a drive north of the city. Its page names orthopaedics as its main focus along with other specialties, imaging and endoscopy, and says it treats private patients and NHS patients. It gave no street address or travel details in the retrieved text, so treat it as a second-tier option whose logistics you would confirm first.

The NHS around Liverpool: ICB, specialist hospitals and what is England-only

NHS care in Liverpool is commissioned by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB, listed on the NHS find-your-ICB page. Two specialist NHS hospitals sit within the city. The Walton Centre, on Lower Lane in Fazakerley, describes itself as the only specialist hospital trust in the UK dedicated to neurology, neurosurgery, spinal and pain management services, and is rated Outstanding by the CQC according to its site. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, on Thomas Drive, covers heart, chest and lung care. General hospital services come from Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, within whose grounds the Sefton Suite sits.

NHS England's guidance sets an 18-week maximum for non-urgent consultant-led treatment and says suspected cancer should be confirmed or ruled out within 28 days. You also have a legal right to choose your provider for a first outpatient appointment, using the e-Referral Service. These are English arrangements; waiting-time standards and choice rules in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland differ and come from those nations' health services.

A point of confusion for many Merseyside patients is that private units attached to NHS sites, such as the Sefton Suite and the Rowan Suite, are separate from NHS clinics in the same grounds. Care you pay for or claim on insurance is arranged with the private unit, while NHS care is arranged through your GP and the NHS provider.

How referral to a private consultant usually works

A GP can write an open or named referral letter, which many insured patients find useful because insurers often ask for one. Self-referral is the second route, with the hospital matching you to a consultant. The Sefton Suite's page says self-paying and insured patients can contact it directly to arrange appointments. The third route is insurer pre-authorisation, where the insurer approves a consultation or scan before it goes ahead and may name which hospitals or consultants it will fund.

Whatever route you choose, ask what is included in any quote, which tests will be done on site and what happens if something unexpected is found. Ask whether the consultant also works at an NHS hospital nearby, because some follow-up or emergency care may then be easier to arrange.

  • GP letter: helps continuity and insurers; ask for it in writing.

  • Self-referral: faster to arrange; some insurers still want a GP letter.

  • Insurer route: authorisation before attending, and check any excess.

Regional notes worth knowing

Liverpool has several elements that other cities lack in the same combination: a nationally described neurosciences hospital at Fazakerley, a dedicated heart and chest hospital in the north-east of the city, and private units that sit beside NHS sites rather than apart from them. That can make it easier to see a consultant who also works nearby on the NHS side, but it should not lead you to assume the NHS and private care are interchangeable.

The independent sector in the city is smaller than in some others. If a specialty you need is not listed by the providers above, ask your GP or consultant for other options, and be prepared to travel to Ormskirk or further afield.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask.

Quick, plain-English answers to the questions we hear most.

  • Which private hospital in Liverpool lists the widest range of specialties?

Of the providers whose pages were read, Spire Liverpool Hospital on Greenbank Road lists the widest everyday range, including heart, skin, respiratory medicine, pain management, ENT and gynaecology. The Sefton Suite near Aintree also lists a broad range, from orthopaedics to dermatology and cardiology.

  • How do I get to Spire Liverpool by public transport?

Its page says the hospital is about four miles from Lime Street station and served by taxis and local buses, without giving bus numbers. Plan the journey on the day using a journey planner, and ask the hospital which stop is closest to the entrance.

  • Is there free parking at the Liverpool private hospitals?

Spire Liverpool says parking on site is free. The Sefton Suite and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital pages retrieved did not give parking details, and Renacres' page referred patients to the hospital for directions and parking.

  • What is the Sefton Suite?

It is described on its own website as the private hospital for Aintree University Hospital, located on Lower Lane within the grounds of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with a diagnostic centre in Crosby. It says profits are reinvested in NHS services.

  • What is the Rowan Suite?

It is the private patient division of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital on Thomas Drive. The hospital's site describes cardiac care, thoracic surgery and respiratory medicine, and says private patients come from all over the world.

  • Where is the neurology hospital in Liverpool?

The Walton Centre, on Lower Lane in Fazakerley, is the NHS specialist hospital for neurology, neurosurgery, spinal and pain management. Its retrieved page did not describe private patient services, so ask the trust directly.

Often yes. The Sefton Suite says self-paying and insured patients can arrange appointments directly. If you are using insurance, check first whether the insurer requires a GP referral.

  • Does Right to Choose apply in Liverpool?

Yes, because Liverpool is in England. A GP can refer you to any provider holding an NHS contract for the service, and the NHS funds it. It does not give a right to private treatment at NHS expense and does not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

  • Which NHS body oversees care in Liverpool?

NHS Cheshire and Merseyside ICB commissions NHS services for the area. Hospitals such as the Walton Centre and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital are NHS providers in their own right.

  • Is Renacres Hospital in Liverpool?

It is in Ormskirk, Lancashire, north of the city. Its page highlights orthopaedics, lists other specialties and says it treats private and NHS patients, but it gave no street address in the retrieved text, so ask the hospital for directions.

This guide is for information, not medical advice.

Your GP or consultant knows your history and can tell you which parts apply to you. If your symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or come with red-flag features, seek urgent medical care. Figures and availability change, so treat them as a guide and confirm with the provider.
