Why people choose us
- 01
A specialist SLT, not a generalist
You see a speech and language therapist with a specific caseload in adult stammering, registered with the HCPC and ASLTIP, not a generalist adult SLT.
- 02
The right approach for you
Fluency shaping, stammering modification, Camperdown, McGuire, or an ACT-based approach. We match you to what fits your goals, not to what one clinic sells.
- 03
Independent, and free
We are paid by no clinic or programme, so the recommendation is impartial and costs you nothing.

What stammering is
A developmental fluency difference, not a habit or a symptom of nerves.
Stammering (or stuttering) is a developmental neurological difference in the way speech is produced. Around 1 in 100 adults stammers, and the social and emotional weight is often larger than the disfluency itself.
-
Repetitions, prolongations and blocks
The three core disfluencies. Some people stammer visibly, others block silently. No two stammers look exactly alike, and none of them is wrong.
-
The hidden part is often the heaviest
Fear of speaking, avoidance of certain words, staying quiet at work, dropping out of conversations. This is where most adults want therapy to help.
-
Not caused by anxiety
Stammering is a neurological difference present from childhood. Anxiety and social pressure can make it worse, but they are not the cause and confidence alone does not remove it.

When it helps
The situations adult stammering therapy addresses.
Not just the speech itself - the fear of the phone, the meeting you dread, the words you swap. Therapy is shaped around the parts that limit your life most.
-
Repetitions, prolongations and blocks
The three core disfluencies. Not every stammer looks the same, and therapy is shaped around what your speech actually does.
-
Fear of specific words or sounds
Anticipatory anxiety about particular letters, phrases or names. Van Riper style modification and ACT both address this directly.
-
Avoidance and word swapping
Swapping words, staying quiet in meetings or avoiding the phone. Often the hidden part of stammering that limits life more than the disfluency itself.
-
Impact at work and interviews
Presentations, client calls, job interviews. Practical rehearsal with your SLT, plus reasonable adjustments at work under the Equality Act.
-
A stammer that has come back
Relapse after childhood or earlier adult therapy is common and does not mean previous work was wasted. Refresher blocks are effective.
-
Wanting acceptance, not just fluency
For many adults the goal is a comfortable relationship with a stammer, not the elimination of it. ACT-based approaches sit here.
-
New self-consciousness in your 20s to 40s
A long-standing stammer that has recently become more distressing. Therapy addresses the emotional load, not only the speech mechanics.
-
A stammer that started in adulthood
Neurogenic or psychogenic acquired stammering is different from developmental stammering. It needs a neurology review first, then targeted SLT.
Evidence-based approaches
Adult stammering therapy is a family of approaches - not a single method.
What each option actually involves - and which tends to fit which set of goals. Many people combine two: a speech technique plus an acceptance-based mindset piece.
-
Camperdown Program
A behavioural fluency-shaping programme built around smooth, slightly prolonged speech at gradually increasing rates. Practical, well evidenced and often delivered online.
-
McGuire Programme
An intensive 4 day course led by people who stammer, teaching costal breathing, assertive speaking and non-avoidance, backed by an ongoing peer community.
-
ARTS Adult Stuttering Therapy
A cognitive-behavioural and acceptance-based programme delivered over 8 weeks, combining stammering education, technique work and mindset shift.
-
Van Riper stammering modification
Voluntary, controlled disfluencies used to reduce fear and struggle. The goal is easier stammering rather than pure fluency - powerful for people with avoidance.
-
Fluency shaping
Precise motor techniques for gentle onsets, light articulator contact and continuous airflow. Works well when combined with real-world practice, not only clinic drills.
-
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Structured work on the fear of speaking, anticipatory anxiety, avoidance and negative self-talk. Often delivered by the SLT, sometimes alongside a psychologist.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
ACT shifts the relationship with a stammer. Less struggle, more values-led speaking. Increasingly used in specialist adult SLT with strong reported wellbeing outcomes.
-
Group therapy and peer courses
City Lit adult stammering courses and STAMMA local groups. Group work often does what individual therapy cannot, especially for avoidance and social confidence.

Peer support
STAMMA, 50 Million Voices and community groups
STAMMA (the British Stammering Association) runs local groups across the UK and the 50 Million Voices campaign. The McGuire Programme has an active peer community, and the City Lit alumni network runs ongoing meet-ups. Peer support often complements individual therapy in a way clinic hours alone cannot.
Telehealth
Online 1:1 SLT sessions and online peer groups
For most adults, video sessions work as well as in-person. StutterTalk, We Stammer Chat and STAMMA online meet-ups make peer contact accessible from anywhere. Intensive residential courses stay in person for the group work they depend on.
Realistic outcomes
What good adult stammering therapy actually delivers.
Therapy for adult stammering is well established and safe. The honest bit is that it is not a cure - it is a set of tools, an understanding, and often a community, for lifelong management.
-
Therapy is not a cure
Adult developmental stammering is a lifelong neurological difference. Therapy gives you tools, understanding and confidence, not a guarantee of permanent fluency.
-
Fluency outcomes vary
Reported improvement in fluency ranges from 60 to 80 percent of participants in structured programmes, with better sustained outcomes when techniques are practised in real life.
-
Wellbeing gains often outlast fluency
Acceptance-based approaches consistently show strong outcomes for reduced avoidance, better mood and greater life participation, sometimes without a large change in disfluency.
-
Relapse is normal, not failure
Techniques weaken without practice, and life stress affects speech. A short refresher block is often all that is needed, and does not mean therapy has failed.
-
Anxiety is a factor, not the cause
Stammering is not caused by anxiety, though anxiety and social pressure can make it worse. Therapy addresses both the speech and the emotional response around it.
-
Home practice matters
Progress is driven by short, daily rehearsal between sessions, in real speaking situations. Weekly session attendance without practice rarely shifts long-term speech patterns.
-
Not for children
Developmental stammering in children under 8 uses different approaches - Lidcombe or Palin Parent-Child Interaction. Paediatric SLT is arranged separately.
-
New-onset adult stammering
A stammer that begins in adulthood after a stroke, head injury or major stress needs a neurology review first, before SLT. We help arrange that pathway.
-
Confidentiality and disclosure
Whether you disclose your stammer at work is your call. If you do, the Equality Act 2010 gives you the right to reasonable adjustments and we can support that conversation.
Reasonable adjustments at work
The Equality Act 2010 covers stammering as a disability
If you choose to disclose your stammer to an employer, you can ask for reasonable adjustments: extended time in interviews, alternatives to unstructured phone calls, written first-contact with new clients, and short communication training for your team. STAMMA has employer-facing resources and your SLT can support the conversation.
Reading your SLT assessment
Your assessment report in four parts. Read the last one first.
Whichever approach your SLT recommends, the written plan you take away tends to follow the same shape.
A quiet reminder
The language of stammering therapy is precise and can read clinically - we translate it for you.
If you would like us to talk you through the report before your next session, just ask.
- 01 History
Onset, course and prior therapy
Age at onset, what has changed over the years, what earlier therapy you have had, and what worked or did not for you.
- 02 Speech
Core and secondary behaviours
The kinds of disfluencies your speech shows - repetitions, prolongations, blocks - plus any secondary behaviours such as eye-blinks or head movement.
- 03 Impact
Avoidance, mood and life participation
How stammering affects work, relationships and daily life. Often measured with OASES or WASSP to give a shared baseline.
- 04 Plan
Goals, approach and session structure
Read this first: your goals, which approach the SLT recommends, how many sessions, and how progress will be reviewed.
Recognised by major UK insurers

Frequently asked
Everything we get asked about adult stammering therapy.
Quick answers on cure, telehealth, insurance, paediatric therapy, relapse and workplace disclosure.
-
Can adult stammering be cured?
No, adult developmental stammering is a lifelong neurological difference and therapy is not a cure. What good therapy does is give you tools to speak with more ease and confidence, reduce avoidance, and change your relationship with your stammer. Many people report large improvements in fluency and wellbeing, but a stammer usually remains part of how they speak.
-
Is online video therapy as effective as in-person sessions?
For most adults, yes. Camperdown, ARTS and 1:1 stammering modification all translate well to video. Telepractice removes travel, makes evening sessions easier, and is often the only realistic option for people outside London. Intensive residential courses such as the McGuire Programme are still delivered in person.
-
Will private health insurance cover adult stammering therapy?
Cover varies. Some insurers fund adult SLT for stammering when clinically indicated with a GP referral, others do not. Bupa, AXA and Vitality assess case by case. We help you check cover before booking, and quote the self-pay figure alongside so you can compare.
-
Is childrens stammering therapy different?
Yes. Developmental stammering in children under 8 uses Lidcombe or Palin Parent-Child Interaction, delivered by paediatric SLTs. The evidence base and approach are quite different from adult therapy, and we arrange those referrals separately.
-
What if my stammer comes back after therapy?
Relapse is common and not a sign that therapy failed. Techniques weaken without practice and life stress affects speech. A short refresher block of four to six sessions, or a return to the peer community, is usually enough to get things back on track.
-
Should I tell my employer that I stammer?
That is a personal decision. If you do disclose, stammering is recognised under the Equality Act 2010 and you can request reasonable adjustments - extended interview time, alternatives to cold phone calls, or communication training for your team. Your SLT can help you prepare that conversation.
