  • Regulation point

Spire says its consultants are on the specialist register of the General Medical Council.

  • Urgent ENT signs

Breathing difficulty, a swelling in the throat, heavy nosebleeds that will not stop, or sudden hearing loss with facial weakness need urgent care via NHS 111, A&E or 999.

Two hospitals, two ENT lists

The two providers overlap on sinus surgery, grommets and tonsillectomy but differ at the edges. Spire's list reads like a general ENT clinic with a cosmetic nose element, whereas Oaklands' list is shorter and more operation-oriented, adding thyroidectomy and eardrum repair. Neither the Nuffield Health sites nor the Christie Private Care listed ENT on the pages read for this guide.

Spire Manchester in Didsbury

Spire's ENT page mentions both earwax removal and microsuction, a procedure in which a clinician uses a small suction probe under magnification to clear wax from the ear canal. For children with persistent glue ear it lists grommet insertion. It also lists dysphagia treatment for swallowing difficulty and laryngoscopy, in which a thin camera looks at the voice box, along with assessments for neck lumps.

The page refers to sleep apnoea testing and snoring treatment, which fits a hospital that also has respiratory medicine on its list. It mentions the main hospital and, historically, a clinic in Hale village, although the hospital's about page described the Hale clinic as closed for refurbishment when read.

Getting to the hospital: its address is 170 Barlow Moor Road, Didsbury, M20 2AF. Withington Metrolink station is a walk away by way of Princess Road, a string of bus routes stop on Princess Road, and the hospital describes a free private car park. MRI, CT and ultrasound are on site, which matters for sinus and neck-lump work-ups.

Oaklands Hospital in Salford

Oaklands' ENT page stresses prompt treatment and consultant-led care. It begins with testing: an allergy assessment for symptoms such as persistent nasal blockage or sneezing, and audiology for hearing problems. Its adult operations include myringoplasty, which repairs a perforated eardrum, endoscopic sinus surgery, grommet insertion, thyroidectomy for goitre, nodules or an overactive thyroid, and tonsillectomy.

The page states that free on-site parking is available and that private medical insurance and payment plans are accepted. The hospital also says it accepts eligible NHS patients. Its pages did not give a street address or public-transport information, so get these from the hospital.

What the named procedures involve

Grommets are tiny tubes placed in the eardrum to let air into the middle ear and drain fluid, typically for children with repeated infections or hearing affected by glue ear. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery opens the natural drainage channels of the sinuses using a camera, usually after medical treatment has not controlled chronic sinusitis. Balloon sinuplasty widens the sinus openings with a small balloon, and whether it suits a person depends on the findings on examination and CT.

Tonsillectomy removes the tonsils for recurrent infections or breathing problems in sleep, and requires a few days of recovery with careful attention to pain control and drinking. Thyroidectomy removes all or part of the thyroid gland and is usually planned after scans and blood tests. Rhinoplasty and septoplasty are different operations: the first reshapes the nose, the second straightens the internal wall to improve breathing.

  • Microsuction: wax removal with a suction probe, no water involved.

  • Grommets: ventilation tubes in the eardrum, mainly for glue ear.

  • Endoscopic sinus surgery: camera-guided opening of blocked sinuses.

  • Septoplasty: straightens the nasal septum to ease breathing.

NHS ENT in Greater Manchester

ENT on the NHS is commissioned by NHS Greater Manchester ICB. Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which lists Trafford General, Wythenshawe and Manchester Royal Infirmary among its sites, is a major provider. The NHS England guidance gives a maximum of 18 weeks for non-urgent consultant-led treatment and a legal right to choose your referral destination through the e-Referral Service.

A lump in the neck that persists, a hoarse voice that does not clear within a few weeks or difficulty swallowing should be raised with a GP promptly because the urgent suspected-cancer pathway aims to confirm or rule out cancer within 28 days.

Questions to ask before ENT treatment in Manchester

Ask whether the consultant will treat adults only or also children, as Spire says it treats both and Oaklands lists a child procedure for grommets. Ask whether a procedure will be done under local or general anaesthetic and whether an overnight stay may be needed. For cosmetic nose surgery ask to be shown the consultant's written advice on risks, realistic outcomes and revision rates.

For insurers, check whether the policy will cover a functional operation such as septoplasty for breathing, which is often treated differently from a cosmetic procedure.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask.

Quick, plain-English answers to the questions we hear most.

  • Where can I get earwax removed privately in Manchester?

Spire Manchester Hospital lists earwax removal and microsuction on its ENT page. Some pharmacies and hearing centres also offer it. Ask whether the clinician is trained in microsuction and whether you have a perforated eardrum or ear surgery history, which may affect the method.

  • Does Oaklands Hospital offer sinus surgery?

Its ENT page lists endoscopic sinus surgery, alongside grommets, myringoplasty, thyroidectomy and tonsillectomy. Whether it is appropriate depends on assessment and imaging.

  • Do these hospitals treat children?

Spire says its ENT service treats both children and adults and lists tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy for children. Oaklands lists grommets for children. Ask about paediatric facilities for your child's age.

  • Is there a private hearing assessment in Manchester?

Spire lists hearing loss assessment and Oaklands lists audiology. NHS audiology is also available through GP referral; see the NHS audiology route if you prefer.

  • What is balloon sinuplasty?

Spire lists balloon sinuplasty for chronic sinusitis. A small balloon is used to widen sinus openings. It does not suit everyone, and a consultant would decide on the basis of examination and scans.

  • Can I park at Oaklands or Spire for an ENT appointment?

Oaklands' ENT page mentions free on-site parking. Spire describes a free private car park with bicycle storage. Oaklands' pages did not give an address or transport directions, so check with the hospital.

  • When is a throat or neck problem urgent?

Difficulty breathing, a swelling in the throat or a nosebleed that will not stop needs 999 or A&E. A lump in the neck, persistent hoarseness or trouble swallowing lasting weeks should be raised with a GP promptly.

  • Does Spire Manchester offer sleep apnoea testing?

Its ENT page lists sleep apnoea testing and snoring treatment. A consultant would explain which test is suitable and whether it is carried out at home or at the hospital.

  • Do I need a GP referral for ENT privately?

Not always, but insurers often require one before they approve a consultation. If you are paying yourself, hospitals commonly accept self-referral; confirm with the one you choose.

  • What does the NHS offer in Greater Manchester for ENT?

NHS ENT services are provided by trusts such as Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and commissioned by NHS Greater Manchester ICB, with an 18-week maximum for non-urgent consultant-led treatment in England.

This guide is for information, not medical advice.

Your GP or consultant knows your history and can tell you which parts apply to you. If your symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or come with red-flag features, seek urgent medical care. Figures and availability change, so treat them as a guide and confirm with the provider.
