Private gynaecology in Manchester: Didsbury, Salford and the NHS alongside
Two Manchester-area hospitals describe gynaecology services on their own websites, Spire Manchester in Didsbury and Oaklands Hospital in Salford, while Saint Mary's Hospital is one of the NHS sites in the local trust. This page sets out what each says it treats, which tests are named, and what a patient might sensibly ask.

Which Manchester hospitals list gynaecology
Of the independent providers whose pages were read for the Manchester guide, only two list gynaecology: Spire Manchester Hospital, at 170 Barlow Moor Road in Didsbury, and Oaklands Hospital in Salford. The Nuffield Health Diagnostic Suite and the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance describe imaging and cardiology or sports services rather than women's health, though imaging such as pelvic ultrasound might be arranged through a diagnostic centre if a consultant requests it. The Christie Private Care is a cancer centre and did not list general gynaecology.
| Provider | Conditions named | Tests and procedures named |
|---|---|---|
| Spire Manchester Hospital | Fertility concerns, recurrent miscarriage, fibroids, ovarian cysts, cervical and ovarian cancers, menopause, menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, endometriosis, PCOS, vaginal and vulval conditions, urinary incontinence | Cervical smears and colposcopy, endometrial ablation, female sterilisation, hormone testing, laparoscopic investigation, ovarian cyst removal, urodynamics, da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery |
| Oaklands Hospital, Salford | Heavy, painful or irregular bleeding, fibroids, cysts, prolapse, pelvic infection, endometriosis, PCOS, menopausal symptoms | Hysteroscopy, hysterectomy, endometrial ablation, laparoscopic sterilisation |
Spire Manchester in Didsbury
Spire's gynaecology page covers a wide front, from reproductive concerns such as repeated miscarriage and PCOS through to menopause and bladder problems. The inclusion of urodynamics, a test that measures how the bladder stores and empties, signals that urinary symptoms are handled within gynaecology rather than only by urology. Hormone testing is named for people with suspected hormonal causes of irregular periods or fertility trouble.
The page says the hospital aims to offer appointments within a few days depending on consultant availability. That is the hospital's aim, not a promise, and it will vary by consultant and season. It also says self-referral is possible while noting that insurance may require a GP referral.
On the logistics side, the hospital lists MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray on site. Its page gives Withington Metrolink and buses along Princess Road as public-transport options, a free private car park and a taxi time of around twenty minutes from the city's main stations. A Hale village clinic mentioned in related service text was shown as closed for refurbishment, so check where your clinic appointment is actually taking place.
Oaklands Hospital in Salford
Oaklands' gynaecology page leads with menstrual problems, fibroids, cysts, prolapse, endometriosis, PCOS and menopause. It names hysteroscopy, a look inside the womb with a thin telescope, as its diagnostic test, and hysterectomy, endometrial ablation and laparoscopic sterilisation as operations. It adds endometriosis treatment, menopause and postmenopausal care and uterine prolapse treatment among the services.
The hospital says free on-site parking is available, and that it accepts self-pay, insured and eligible NHS patients, with payment plans for those paying themselves. Oaklands' retrieved pages did not provide a street address or transport directions, so ask the hospital for them before travelling.
What the named tests and procedures involve
Colposcopy is a closer look at the cervix after an abnormal screening result, performed with a magnifying instrument and sometimes a small biopsy. Hysteroscopy passes a thin camera through the cervix to look at the lining of the womb, often to investigate heavy or irregular bleeding or bleeding after menopause. Laparoscopic investigation uses keyhole incisions to look at the pelvis, which can help diagnose endometriosis or explain pelvic pain.
Endometrial ablation is a procedure to reduce heavy periods by treating the womb lining, and it is not suitable if you still want a pregnancy. Hysterectomy removes the womb and is usually considered after less invasive options. Robotic-assisted techniques, like the da Vinci system that Spire mentions, are a way of performing keyhole surgery; they are a technique choice and not by themselves a guarantee of a better result.
-
Colposcopy: examination of the cervix following an abnormal smear.
-
Hysteroscopy: inspection of the womb cavity with a thin camera.
-
Laparoscopy: keyhole look at the pelvis; can diagnose endometriosis.
-
Urodynamics: bladder pressure and flow studies for incontinence.
The NHS alongside: Saint Mary's and Greater Manchester
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust lists Saint Mary's Hospital among its sites, and the trust's website also names Wythenshawe, Trafford General and the Royal Infirmary. Women's NHS services in the area are commissioned by NHS Greater Manchester ICB. In England you have a legal right to choose the hospital or service you are referred to through the e-Referral Service for an NHS first appointment, and the maximum wait for non-urgent consultant-led treatment is 18 weeks according to NHS England guidance.
An urgent referral is different. If a GP suspects gynaecological cancer, the aim is for it to be confirmed or ruled out within 28 days. Bleeding after the menopause is one symptom that normally warrants prompt assessment through your GP.
Questions worth asking in Manchester
Ask whether a diagnostic procedure such as hysteroscopy can be done in the outpatient clinic or needs theatre, and whether sedation or anaesthesia is involved. Ask what the written quote includes: consultant fee, hospital fee, pathology and follow-up. If you are insured, ask whether the insurer will pay for hormone testing or urodynamics, which are sometimes treated differently from a consultation.
If the consultation concerns fertility or recurrent miscarriage, ask what the hospital can offer on site and what would need to be arranged elsewhere. Spire lists those concerns under gynaecology, but an assessment is not the same as a fertility treatment service, and the page does not describe one.
Frequently asked
Questions people ask.
Quick, plain-English answers to the questions we hear most.
-
Which private hospitals in Manchester list gynaecology?
Spire Manchester Hospital in Didsbury and Oaklands Hospital in Salford both describe gynaecology services on their own websites. Other Manchester providers read for this guide focus on imaging, cardiology, sports medicine or cancer care.
-
Can I refer myself to a private gynaecologist in Manchester?
Spire's gynaecology page says self-referral is available, while noting that insurance may require a GP referral. Oaklands says it accepts self-pay, insured and eligible NHS patients. If you plan to claim on insurance, ask the insurer before you book.
-
What tests does Spire Manchester list for gynaecology?
It names cervical smears and colposcopy, hormone testing, laparoscopic investigation and urodynamics, and lists procedures such as endometrial ablation, ovarian cyst removal and female sterilisation. It also describes robotic-assisted surgery for operations like hysterectomy.
-
Does Oaklands offer hysteroscopy?
Its gynaecology page names hysteroscopy as a test, together with hysterectomy, endometrial ablation and laparoscopic sterilisation. Ask whether it is done in clinic or under anaesthetic for your situation.
-
Where would I go for menopause advice in Manchester?
Both Spire Manchester and Oaklands list menopause among the conditions they see, and Spire also names hormone testing. Your GP can also help, and NHS menopause care sits within the local ICB.
-
Is there parking at these hospitals?
Spire Manchester describes a free private car park with bicycle storage, and Oaklands pages mention free on-site parking. Oaklands' retrieved pages did not give an address or directions, so confirm those directly.
-
What does Right to Choose mean for gynaecology?
In England your GP can refer you to any provider holding an NHS contract for the service you need, and the choice is made through the e-Referral Service. It does not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and it is not the same as paying privately.
-
When is a gynaecological problem urgent?
Sudden severe pelvic pain, very heavy bleeding, bleeding in pregnancy or fainting should be assessed urgently through NHS 111, A&E or 999. Bleeding after the menopause should be raised with a GP promptly.
-
Is robotic surgery better for hysterectomy?
Spire says it uses the da Vinci robotic-assisted system for operations such as hysterectomy and fibroid removal. It is a way of delivering keyhole surgery; whether it suits you depends on your anatomy, condition and surgeon, and you can ask for an honest comparison with other approaches.
-
Does the NHS in Manchester offer the same services?
NHS gynaecology is provided through trusts such as Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which lists Saint Mary's Hospital among its sites. Access follows NHS referral rules, with an 18-week maximum for non-urgent consultant-led treatment in England.

This guide is for information, not medical advice.
Your GP or consultant knows your history and can tell you which parts apply to you. If your symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or come with red-flag features, seek urgent medical care. Figures and availability change, so treat them as a guide and confirm with the provider.
