Thermage FLX has no downtime and no broken skin. The things worth planning are comfort during the session, the 3 to 6 month timeline for results, and the maintenance interval.

Discomfort during the pulse
A brief hot pinch on each pulse, buffered by vibration and real-time cryogen cooling. Most patients score 3 to 5 out of 10; an oral analgesic is optional.

Redness for a few hours
Pink flush for 2 to 6 hours after the session, occasionally mild puffiness for 24 hours. Makeup the same day.

What is Thermage FLX and how does it work?
Thermage FLX is a monopolar radiofrequency device made by Solta Medical (a division of Bausch Health). A vibrating tip with integrated cryogen cooling heats the dermis and superficial subcutaneous layer to 60 to 65°C. That triggers immediate collagen contraction and, over 3 to 6 months, new collagen formation - the source of the tightening effect.

Does Thermage hurt? What is different about FLX?
The older Thermage CPT had a reputation for being uncomfortable. Thermage FLX added a vibrating tip, real-time skin thermometry (AccuREP) and larger tips - which shortened treatment time and dropped comfort scores to 3 to 5 out of 10 for most patients. An oral analgesic can be taken beforehand if you prefer.

How is Thermage different from Sofwave, Ultherapy and Morpheus8?
Sofwave uses ultrasound at 1.5 mm mid-dermal depth and tends to be better tolerated. Ultherapy (MFU-V) reaches the SMAS at 4.5 mm for a deeper structural lift. Morpheus8 is bipolar RF microneedling - deeper, needled, with 3 to 5 days of downtime, and better for texture and mild scarring. Thermage is the only platform with a dedicated eyelid tip and involves no needling and no downtime.

Is Thermage a replacement for a facelift?
No. Thermage is ideal for early to moderate skin laxity in patients who are not yet ready for surgery, or who want to maintain results after surgery. Established jowls, heavy neck banding, deep nasolabial folds or true skin excess need a surgical opinion - most often a deep-plane facelift or blepharoplasty rather than a device.
