    The easiest entry point. Finish a normal shower cold. Low risk, low cost, most of the mood effect.

  • Progressive cold exposure

    Add seconds each week or drop the temperature slowly. Adaptation happens over weeks — respect it.

  • Supervised open-water swim

    Join a club or supported venue. Lifeguards, safety cover, and other swimmers around — the safest way in.

  • Home ice bath with a safety plan

    Never alone, always with a timer, and a way out. Aim short — 2-5 minutes at 10-15°C is plenty for most benefits.

  • Wim Hof method — with proper training

    Take a certified course. Always practise the breathing on land, sitting or lying down. Never in or near water.

  • Post-exercise cold plunge — occasional

    Fine for recovery around competition or heavy training blocks. Avoid immediately after resistance training if hypertrophy is the goal.

  • Contrast showers

    Alternating hot and cold. Gentler than a plunge, easier to sustain daily. Good for circulation and habit-building.

Cold water therapy is not universal. These are hard stops or absolute rules — not preferences.

  • Cardiac arrhythmia

    Any known arrhythmia — AF, SVT, long-QT — is a hard contraindication until reviewed by a cardiologist.

  • Uncontrolled hypertension

    Cold exposure spikes blood pressure sharply. Get your BP under control before you start.

  • Epilepsy

    The cold shock response and breath-hold can lower the seizure threshold — and a seizure in water is fatal.

  • Pregnancy

    Insufficient evidence on safety. Discuss with your midwife or obstetrician before starting or continuing cold immersion.

  • Raynaud’s phenomenon

    Cold exposure can trigger severe vasospasm. Cold immersion is generally not advised.

  • Cold urticaria

    A cold-triggered hive response — in some people, full-body cold immersion can cause anaphylaxis. Get tested first.

  • Bipolar disorder — Wim Hof breathing

    Intense breathwork can destabilise mood in bipolar disorder. Skip the breathing protocol; keep cold exposure brief and grounded.

  • Post-drinking cold water

    Alcohol impairs judgement, thermoregulation and the gasp reflex. Every year people drown after "just a quick dip" following a pub visit.
