Prenuvo-style whole-body MRI, explained honestly.
A 60 to 90 minute, non-contrast, radiation-free scan from brain to pelvis. Genuinely useful for a small number of people. Not a proven screening test, and not a substitute for mammograms, colonoscopy or mpMRI of the prostate. Here is what it actually finds, what it costs across UK providers, and where its limits sit.

NICE does not recommend whole-body MRI as a routine screen for asymptomatic adults. No randomised trial has shown a mortality benefit. Detection rates for incidental findings run to 20 to 40%. Some are genuinely early cancers. Most are not.

Preparation and the day
What to expect, practically.
Straightforward, painless, and safe for almost everyone. A few implants and devices need clearance in advance.

60 to 90 minutes in the scanner, plus safety check-in.

Loose, no metal. A gown is provided.

Implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, prior surgery all disclosed in advance.

Bowel prep
Occasional light prep or bladder filling for the pelvic component.

Normal fluids on the day. No fasting unless requested.

Some centres offer sub-specialist double reads at the higher end. Reports usually reach you via a patient portal within 5 to 10 working days, with tiered findings and follow-up recommendations.
Reporting
Read by a specialist. Delivered with follow-up plans.
Screening MRIs are reported by consultant radiologists trained in whole-body imaging. Several UK centres offer a double read for anything ambiguous. The final report is graded, so a benign cyst is not presented in the same voice as a suspicious mass.

Breast screening remains X-ray based. Full-body MRI is not a breast MRI.

Bowel mucosal disease and polyps require endoscopy.

Six things worth understanding before you book.

Is whole-body MRI recommended by NICE or the NHS?
No. NICE does not recommend whole-body MRI as a routine screening test for asymptomatic adults, and there is no randomised trial showing a mortality benefit. It is an emerging preventive imaging option offered privately, and informed consent about its limits is essential.

How often will something be found?
In our experience across UK providers, roughly 70% of scans are essentially normal, 20 to 25% show minor incidental findings that need reassurance or a short-interval repeat, and 5 to 8% show something significant enough to warrant further workup. Genuinely important early cancer detection is uncommon but does occur.

What about false positives and anxiety?
This is the honest downside. Incidental findings can lead to additional scans, biopsies and weeks of uncertainty before a benign result is confirmed. Before booking, decide how you would want to handle an ambiguous finding.

Does it use contrast or radiation?
No ionising radiation. Most screening protocols are non-contrast. Gadolinium is only added if a targeted question arises and your kidney function allows.

Is Prenuvo available in the UK?
Prenuvo is a US company. The closest UK equivalents include Ezra, OneWelbeck, HCA Wellington, London Medical and InHealth, each offering their own whole-body screening protocol on 1.5T or 3T scanners.

Does it replace my regular screening?
No. Whole-body MRI does not replace mammography, cervical smears, bowel screening, mpMRI of the prostate, low-dose lung CT or coronary calcium scoring. Treat it as an addition, not a substitute.
