The journey
From first photos to peak result, step by step.
One concierge from enquiry through the 8 to 12 week review, so cycle counts and progress photos actually get compared.
- 01
Before
You send photos and areas of concern
A short, confidential form. Front, side and back photos of the flanks, abdomen, thigh or submental area, plus your height, weight and any prior treatments.
- 02
Before
We come back with a recommendation
Within one working day: whether cryolipolysis fits, or whether EmSculpt NEO, injectable lipolysis or VASER is the better call. Indicative price. An honest read either way.
- 03
Before
We book the applicator plan
Applicator sizes and cycle count agreed with the provider, plus consent covering paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH), bruising and numbness.
- 04
On the day
Arrival at the clinic
Marking, gel pad placement and applicator positioning. Intense cold for 5 minutes, then comfortable numbness. No sedation, no needles.
- 05
On the day
The cycle itself
35 to 45 minutes per applicator at around -11C. Elite dual applicators can treat two areas at once. Two-minute post-treatment massage of each site.
- 06
On the day
Straight back to work
No downtime. Expect redness, mild swelling and a numb, dough-like sensation for a few days to weeks. Compression garments are not required.
- 07
After
Results at 8 to 12 weeks
Apoptosis clears fat cells slowly through the lymphatics. First changes at 3 weeks, peak result at 8 to 12 weeks. A second cycle is often planned 6 to 8 weeks in.
When it helps
The areas cryolipolysis suits, and the ones it does not.
The eight scenarios we see most often, plus the two hard rules: not for weight loss, and not for skin laxity or visceral fat.
-
Flanks and love handles
Classic pinchable rolls above the waistband. One of the highest-satisfaction areas for cryolipolysis.
-
Lower and upper abdomen
Post-pregnancy pouch or stubborn belly fat that has not shifted with diet. Diastasis and loose skin are not treated by cold alone.
-
Inner and outer thighs
Saddlebags and inner-thigh chafing. Contoured curved applicators fit the anatomy without pinch marks.
-
Submental double chin
The CoolMini applicator drains fat under the jawline. Often paired with skin-tightening if laxity is the real issue.
-
Upper arms and bra rolls
Brachial and posterior axillary fat. Two cycles per side is typical for a visible change.
-
Banana roll below the buttock
The crease of fat under the gluteal fold. A small, satisfying area that responds well to a single small-applicator cycle.
-
Not for weight loss
Cryolipolysis is a body-contouring tool, not a weight-loss treatment. Ideal BMI is under 30 and stable weight for 3 months.
-
Not for visceral fat or laxity
Fat behind the abdominal wall (visceral), true skin laxity, or diastasis recti will not respond. We refer to surgical or energy-based options instead.
Alternatives compared
CoolSculpting sits inside a family of options.
Non-surgical is not always right, and surgical is not always wrong. Here is how each option compares for the same complaint.
-
CoolSculpting Elite (Allergan / AbbVie)
The current-generation device with C-shaped cups, dual applicators and 18% larger cooling area than legacy CoolSculpting. The clinical gold standard we recommend.
-
EmSculpt NEO
HIFEM plus radiofrequency: builds muscle and reduces fat in the same 30-minute cycle. Better for fit patients wanting definition, not for large pinches of fat.
-
TruSculpt iD (RF)
Monopolar radiofrequency heats fat to 45C. Comparable outcomes on the abdomen, adds mild skin tightening, but a smaller evidence base than cryolipolysis.
-
Aqualyx or Kybella injections
Deoxycholic-acid fat-dissolving injections. Better for very small, defined pockets like a mild double chin. More downtime, more swelling.
-
VASER liposuction
Ultrasound-assisted surgical fat removal. Removes far more fat with true contouring, but under local or general anaesthetic with 1 to 2 weeks of downtime.
-
Mini tummy tuck
Surgical option for lower-abdominal skin and diastasis. When laxity, not fat, is the real complaint, no amount of freezing will fix it.
-
Renuvion J-Plasma
Helium-plasma skin tightening, often added to liposuction. The right adjunct when moderate laxity co-exists with fat.
-
Post-weight-loss body contouring
For patients who have lost significant weight, cryolipolysis is rarely enough. A staged surgical plan is usually the honest answer.

Safety and recovery
What to expect, honestly.
Transient effects are common and settle. PAH is rare but real. Skin laxity and visceral fat are not treated.
-
Expected transient effects
Redness, mild swelling, bruising, tingling, numbness and a firm dough-like feel in the treated area. Most settle within days; numbness can linger for 2 to 4 weeks.
-
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)
A rare (0.05% to 1%) but distressing complication where the treated area enlarges 2 to 5 months later, usually in men. Correction requires liposuction. We will discuss the risk before you consent.
-
Post-treatment massage
A firm 2-minute massage of each cycle site roughly doubles fat reduction. It is uncomfortable, and non-negotiable if you want the best result.
-
Skin colour and pigmentation
Fitzpatrick V and VI skin has a small increased risk of transient post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Providers experienced with darker skin tones matter.
-
Late-onset neuropathic pain
A minority of patients get a brief window of sharp or itchy nerve pain around days 3 to 7. Simple analgesia is usually enough; it settles.
-
Skin laxity is not treated
Removing fat from a compartment with poor skin tone can make laxity look worse. If your skin does not bounce back on pinch, discuss RF or surgical options first.
-
Not a weight-loss treatment
Cryolipolysis works best on stable weight, BMI under 30 and pinchable subcutaneous fat. It is not a substitute for diet, exercise or GLP-1 therapy.
-
Realistic reduction per cycle
Around 20% to 25% reduction of the fat layer per cycle. Most areas need 2 to 3 cycles, 6 to 8 weeks apart, for a visible change on photography.
-
Red flags after treatment
Severe pain beyond a week, blistering, spreading redness, or an enlarging firm swelling at 8 weeks or later - contact the clinic promptly.
Your treatment record
Four things a proper CoolSculpting record includes.
Standardised photography and a written applicator map are the difference between "it looks a bit better" and an objective comparison.
- 01 Baseline
Photographs, measurements and pinch test
Standardised front, side and oblique photos, waist and hip circumference, and a pinch test to confirm the fat is truly subcutaneous.
- 02 Plan
Applicator map and cycle count
Which applicator on which site, how many cycles per area, and the interval between sessions (usually 6 to 8 weeks).
- 03 Consent
PAH, numbness and realistic results
Written acknowledgement of PAH risk, expected transient effects, the 20% to 25% per-cycle rule, and the fact that cryolipolysis is not weight loss.
- 04 Follow-up
Review at 8 to 12 weeks
Repeat photography from the same angles and lighting. Objective comparison against baseline decides whether a further cycle adds value.
Frequently asked
Everything we get asked about CoolSculpting.
Straight answers on weight loss, PAH risk, sessions, cost, timing and skin tightening.
-
Will CoolSculpting help me lose weight?
No. CoolSculpting is a body-contouring treatment for localised pinchable subcutaneous fat, not a weight-loss tool. Ideal candidates are within 5 to 10 kg of a healthy weight, have a BMI under 30 and have been stable for at least 3 months. If weight loss is the goal, diet, exercise or GLP-1 therapy will do more.
-
What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)?
PAH is a rare complication where the treated fat area enlarges rather than shrinks, usually 2 to 5 months after treatment. Reported rates range from 0.05% to about 1%, and it is more common in men. It does not resolve on its own and requires liposuction to correct. Every reputable Allergan-trained clinic will discuss this with you before you consent.
-
How many sessions will I need?
Most areas need 2 to 3 cycles, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, to give a visible change on standardised photography. Each cycle reduces the fat layer in that spot by around 20% to 25%. Larger areas such as the full abdomen and flanks often need 4 cycles across two visits.
-
How much does CoolSculpting cost in London?
Roughly £750 to £1,400 per applicator per cycle, depending on the size of the applicator and the clinic. A typical treatment plan runs 2 to 4 cycles per area, so the total for one area is usually £1,600 to £4,500. Full abdomen and flanks packages sit at the higher end.
-
When will I see results?
The first subtle changes appear at around 3 weeks. Peak results are usually seen at 8 to 12 weeks, when apoptotic fat cells have been cleared through the lymphatic system. Standardised before-and-after photography at the same angle and lighting is the honest way to judge.
-
Will CoolSculpting tighten loose skin?
No. Cryolipolysis only affects fat cells. If you have significant skin laxity, removing fat may make it look worse. When laxity is the real issue, radiofrequency (Morpheus8, Renuvion) or surgical options (mini tummy tuck, post-weight-loss contouring) are more honest choices.
